Four Bruins Earn Trips to Austin on Day One of NCAA West Preliminaries

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The UCLA track & field team added four more qualifiers for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday evening during day one of the NCAA West Preliminaries at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State.
 
The four Bruins who will join Christina Chenault (heptathlon) include Justin Stafford (hammer), Alyssa Wilson (hammer), Sondre Guttormsen (pole vault) and Robert Brandt (10K).
 
UCLA opened the meet on fire, getting its second official ticket to Austin with Stafford's eighth-place finish in the hammer. On his second attempt, Stafford posted a throw of 65.46m (214-9) to continue his postseason career.
 
The women's portion of the hammer throw saw Wilson place third overall to advance to the final site in the event for the second year in a row. All the sophomore needed was her first attempt, as she threw 63.95m (209-9) to shoot straight to the upper echelon of the pack.
 
Guttormsen, a freshman, will be making his first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The native of Ski, Norway, cleared 5.31m (17-5) on his first and only attempt at the height to place ninth.
 
To cap the evening, Brandt was the runner-up in the men's 10K, crossing the finish line at the 29:00.43 mark to earn another trip to nationals.
 
Both Myles Webb (100m) and Joe Herrera (400m) reached tomorrow's quarterfinal rounds of their respective events. Webb completed the first-round race in 10.40, while Herrera advanced with a tick of 46.68.
 
In the opening round of the women's 400m, Meleni Rodney continued her hot streak, placing eighth overall with a time of 52.83 to advance to Friday's quarterfinal.
 
Michael Fancey and Tate Curran also represented UCLA in the pole vault, placing 16th (5.21m; 17-1) and 21st (5.11m; 16-9.25), respectively. 
 
In the women's javelin, Ilaria Casarotto capped her sophomore campaign with a 22nd-place finish, tossing 45.87m (150-6) in second-career regionals appearance.
 
The Bruins continued their action on the field in the men's long jump, as Harrison Schrage led the way with a 29th-place finish at 7.19m (23-7.25). Isaiah Holmes was right behind at 32nd, with his best effort at 7.14m (5.25).  
 
Jacob Wilson also competed for the Bruins, taking 41st in the hammer with a mark of 57.16m (187-6).
 
Leon Powell went 41st in the 100m (10.58), and Cameron Stone finished the 400m in 47.88 to go 43rd. 
 
In heat two of the men's 800m, Riley Kelly placed fifth overall, just missing a spot in the quarterfinal with a time of 1:51.03.
 
In addition to Brandt's second-place finish in the 10K, UCLA also got strong performances from Colin Burke (29th; 29:47.84) and Garrett Reynolds (30th; 29:48.30).
 
In the first round of the men's 1500m, Arturo Sotomayor (3:46.71) paced the Bruins with a 25th-place finish, followed by Chris Morzenti (3:46.99) at 26 and Tyler Janes (3:52.68) at 45.
 
UCLA is back in action tomorrow at noon (PT), starting with the women's discus and men's javelin.
