Seven Beavers Earn Pac-12 Academic Honors

Corvallis – Seven Oregon State softball players have earned academic honors from the Pac-12, the conference announced on Thursday. Kayleen Shafer was named to the Academic Second Team, while Jessica Garcia, Sara Lillie, Mariah Mazon, Missy Nunes, Michelle Sass and Camryn Ybarra were selected as Honorable Mentions.

Shafer notches her second Pac-12 Academic Second Team honor as a Business Management major with a 3.50 overall GPA. Also away from the field, Shafer is the Secretary of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The Mission Viejo, Calif. native appeared in 33 games this season and was second on the team in doubles with eight. Shafer plans to graduate this June with plans to attend Cal State Fullerton to obtainer her MBA while serving as the graduate assistant for the softball team.

Garcia is a Human Development and Family Science major, and started in 44 of Oregon State's 45 games. The Hughson, Calif. native maintained a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage during the 2019 season. She also was the top play on SportsCenter, top NCAA Softball Play of the Week and top NCAA Softball Picture of the Week after robbing a home run over the left-field fence against Utah on May 10.

Lillie, also a Human Development and Family Science major only saw time in five games this season due to an injury. The sophomore recorded a hit and a RBI against Seattle U on Feb. 9 to help the Beavers capture a 6-4 victory.

Mazon is a Psychology major, and was most recently selected to the Pac-12 All-Conference Second Team and the NFCA All-Region Second Team. Mazon started 26 games in the circle for OSU this season and threw 20 complete games, including four shutouts. The Tulare, Calif. native finished the season with 166 strike outs in 174.0 innings pitched and earned Pitcher of the Week honors on Apr. 29 after sweeping Oregon.

Nunes is a Human Development and Family Science major, while starting every game for the Beavers in 2019. The sophomore batted .273 with 36 hits, 23 runs and 27 RBI. Nunes earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Feb. 11 after belting three home runs, seven hits, five runs and 10 RBI over the course of five games from Feb. 8-10.

Sass is a Kinesiology major who started in 21 games for Oregon State. The St. Helens, Ore. native finished the season with 11 hits, including five doubles and seven runs scored. The senior plans to graduate this June and take a public health internship in Botswana before applying to medical school in 2020.

Ybarra is also a Human Development and Family Science major and saw action in 35 games, primarily at designated player. The sophomore maintained a .326 batting average against Pac-12 opponents and finished the season with 23 hits, nine doubles and 10 RBI. Ybarra also finished the season with two home runs, one of which came in the 8-6 victory over Oregon on Apr. 27.
