Drawing With The Devils

In Case You Missed It
PULLMAN, Wash. – For the second-straight contest No. 15 Washington State (9-3-1, 2-2-1) dominated the stat sheet only to leave Lower Soccer Field frustrated, this time settling for a 0-0 draw with Arizona State (6-5-3, 0-3-2) Sunday afternoon in Pullman. From the beginning whistle until the final horn 110:00 minutes later the Cougars were in complete control of the game at home against the Sun Devils, peppering the ASU defense with 27 shots including 10 on goal while allowing just four attempts by the opposition. With the defense locking down the Sun Devils, the Cougars' offense was able to run free, but were unable to break through as ASU's keeper, Giulia Cascapera notched nine saves, one off of her career best mark of 10. In addition, the Cougars saw a late attack off a corner result in a defensive save in which the Sun Devils defenders threw all parts of their bodies in front of ball in the scramble to stop the chance. The late corner was one of seven for the Cougars while allowing just one on the other end of the field.

Stat of the Match
The Cougars did not allow the first shot on goal until the 88'. The shot was also the first of the second half for ASU and one of just two shots in the second half and overtime.

The Moments That Made The Match Things You Need To Know
  • Washington State picked up its first draw of the year and earned its seventh point in Pac-12 play.
  • The Cougs moved to 2-0-1 in overtime contests on the year.
  • Over the weekend WSU outshot its opponents 45-15 but came up empty going 0-1-1 against the Arizona schools. The back-to-back home shutouts were the first for the Cougs since 2017 when they fell to No. 2 Stanford and Colorado in consecutive Thursday contests to begin Pac-12 play. However, it was the first time since 2014 the Cougars' suffered back-to-back home shutouts over a weekend of play when they fell 1-0 to UCLA and USC at the end of conference play. In both cases the Cougars advanced to the NCAA Tournament with a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2017.
  • The Cougars' offense, while finding ample opportunities, has been held to just one goal in its last four contests.
  • Super senior Ella Dederick became the program's all-time leader in minutes played during the first half of the contest moving past all-time great Gurveen Clair. Dederick finished the day having played 7187:45 passing Clair's record of 7,098:08 minutes in goal. Dederick is the program's all-time leader in wins at 46 while sitting second in shutouts at 25 and third in saves with 269.
  • Senior Morgan Weaver tied a season-high with 10 shots, six on frame, but was held scoreless for the seventh-straight game. Weaver was the catalyst to the entire Cougar attack, setting up an array of scoring chances for her teammates when not taking them herself.
  • The Cougars look to get their offense back rolling at Oregon, Saturday, Oct. 19 in Eugene, Ore. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
