Trojans Come Up Short in South Bend USC falls to No. 9 Notre Dame, 30-27

USC came alive in the second half of its rivalry game at Notre Dame, but ultimately couldn't overcome its slow start.

The Trojans only managed to put one field goal on the board in the first half and trailed by 14 points at the break.

True freshman QB Kedon Slovis stepped up in the second half to make it a close game.

He threw for 255 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions on the night.

Amon-Ra St. Brown caught the first TD from Slovis, while Tyler Vaughns caught the second, which left USC at only a 3-point disadvantage in the 4th quarter.

Redshirt freshman RB Markese Stepp, who had dozens of friends and family members travel to the game from his hometown of Indianapolis, also had a big second half.

Stepp muscled his way to a career-high 82 yards and a touchdown.

Despite big performances in the second half, USC couldn't come up with the stops it needed to pull off the upset.

The Trojans particularly struggled in the run game, allowing 308 rush yards, including 49 yards and the game-clinching TD from Irish QB Ian Book.

The Trojans head into the second half of the season at 3-3.

With only Pac-12 contests remaining, USC head coach Clay Helton reminded the team that they can still win the conference title and play in the Rose Bowl.

USC returns home this week for its Homecoming/Reunion Weekend game against Arizona.

The game will begin at 6:30 pm PT and will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network.
