SAN FRANCISCO — UCLA’s Kaiya McCullough was named the 2019 Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced   on Tuesday. The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes that are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.

McCullough is the second Bruin to be named Pac-12 Women’s Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year, joining Sarah Killion in 2014. The Mission Viejo native is a political science major and currently holds a 3.73 cumulative grade point average. McCullough’s impressive academic résumé has earned her a significant amount of recognition across collegiate sports. In 2018, she received UCLA’s Athletic Director’s Academic Excellence Award, an honor given to senior student-athletes who have made the Director's Honor Roll every quarter they were enrolled at UCLA. She was also selected as the only student to serve on a live panel for a discussion about Athletes, Activism and Jackie Robinson’s Legacy, a one-hour dialogue that was a part of a series of events recognizing Robinson’s 100th birthday held last February.

On the field, McCullough has been a vital part of the UCLA defense, starting in every match this season and helping the Bruins to a second-place Conference finish. The senior has led a back line that has recorded 10 shutouts so far this fall. The three-time All-Pac-12 honoree was named Second Team All-Conference this season for the second time in her career (2017). In 2018, McCullough was selected to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and in 2017, she was named second team All-West Region and All-Conference. In her Freshman season, McCullough was selected to the All-Pac-12 Freshman Team and First Team TopDrawerSoccer Freshman Best XI.

In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50% of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport’s regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.

A Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be named in each of the Pac-12’s 24 sponsored sports: baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, beach volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse, men’s rowing, women’s rowing, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball, men’s swimming & diving, women’s swimming & diving, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s track & field, women’s track & field, women’s volleyball, and wrestling.
