Ethan Hoopingarner Named to Freshman All-America Team

LOS ANGELES – After showing himself to be one of college baseball's most valuable relievers through the shortened 2020 season, Ethan Hoopingarner was named to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's Freshman All-America team this week.
 
Hoopingarner is the first Trojan since Ricky Oropesa in 2009 to earn freshman All-American honors.
 
In his first year our of Aliso Niguel HS, Hoopingarner was one of the most reliable relievers in the country, making nine appearances on the mound (4th most in the Pac-12 and 35th in the NCAA) while giving up just one run and three hits in 11.1 innings pitched. He posted a 0.79 ERA, striking out 16 batters and walking just four.
 
The freshman righty helped USC to wins in seven of his nine appearances, including 2.0 scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory over No. 21 TCU. He had five outings in which he did not allow a hit or a walk and pitched at least an inning or more seven times. Hoopingarner was also credited with the win on 2/23 after tossing 2.0 perfect innings against San Diego State.
 
The 2020 season was cut short on March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Trojans were 10-5 up to that point, taking two-of-three games each weekend.
