Statement from Kiara Kennedy, Sun Devil Softball
I am a proud Sun Devil Softball player. I am also an African American student-athlete playing in a predominantly White sport.
Even before the protests, this reality caused me to think about race in ways many of my peers don't have too.
I recall looking in the stands at White faces looking back at me wondering if they were only cheering for the name on the front of my jersey, with no regard or understanding of the name on the back.
That name represents my mother, my family, my culture and me.
I am also a part of the broader African American community and culture that needs you to hear us when we say Black Lives Matter. Not just listen to the words, but really hear them.
It is not enough to stare back and to applaud. It is time to get involved.
I look forward to when we can return to play. I also look forward to a time when we do not return to racism.
Black Lives Matter. I hope you hear me.
