Stanford student-athletes share their experiences and perspectives on racial injustice in a new installment of “Our Stories: Stanford Roundtable,” airing tonight on Pac-12 Network

Jul 16, 2020
“Our Stories: Stanford Roundtable” airs tonight at 7 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. MT on Pac-12 Network and will be featured on the Pac-12 Perspective podcast tomorrow
SAN FRANCISCO - Tonight, Pac-12 Networks is airing an exclusive interview with Stanford women’s basketball’s Jenna Brown and Maya Dodson, football’s Thomas Booker and former women’s soccer player Ryan Walker-Hartshorn, who go in depth about issues bigger than sports on a new installment of “Our Stories: Stanford Roundtable.” The episode airs tonight at 7 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. MT on Pac-12 Network.

Host Ashley Adamson sits down with Brown, Dodson, Booker and Walker-Hartshorn to discuss the Black Lives Matter movement and their perspectives on racial injustice. The group opens up about what it’s like to be a Black student-athlete in addition to being a Black student at Stanford and working together with the Black community.

“A lot of Black students are doing so much for social justice, more than I’ve done my three years here - like I’m just getting started,” said Dodson. “[Black students have] been on this train, they’ve had all their statements written out, and it’s sad because in athletics, we have a large platform even if we’re not doing anything, but they can do a lot and still not have that platform. So I’m trying to have that conversation with my sorority sisters and other Black students in the community - like, you guys are doing great things, how can we help amplify that? But not make it seem like it’s all about us, but make sure your message is getting across… I think this is a time for change, and I think we can definitely do a better job organizing as student-athletes but also as a Black community in general.”

The group also discusses the importance of using their platform to guide change, and how universities and athletic departments can promote awareness and action, as well as the different layers of racism that exist in day-to-day life.

“These things people don’t think happen, or they think they’re small and they don’t matter at all, but there are certain codes that apply to Black people and don’t apply to other people, and they manifest themselves in many ways,” said Booker. “So we know that overt racism is terrible, most people know that, but covert racism a lot of the time is much harder to deal with, much more insidious, and therefore it’s a lot harder to deal with. Hopefully we’re at the point in our conversation about race where people can agree about covert racism being bad, but I think the real progress exists when we find out how to get in between the lines to the daily basic assumptions that people don’t even realize they make, that are the things that really promote systemic racism and inequality.”
