Verdell Makes Doak Walker List Again
DALLAS – Coming off a second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season, Oregon junior CJ Verdell earned spot on the Doak Walker Award Watch List for the second straight year on Wednesday.
The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation's top college running back. Oregon has had a running back earn semifinalist status for the award five times since 2010, highlighted by LaMichael James winning in 2010.
Verdell is one of seven returning FBS players with 1,000 yards rushing each of the last two seasons while his total of 2,238 yards over that span is fourth among returning players. The Chula Vista, Calif., product finished second in the Pac-12 with 1,220 rushing yards in 2019 and became just the third player in Oregon history to rush for 1,000 yards as a freshman and sophomore.
His sophomore campaign featured 1,022 rushing yards on 150 carries (6.81 per carry) against Pac-12 opponents, which was capped by a Pac-12 Championship Game MVP performance against the nation's top rushing defense. Verdell's 208 yards and three TDs on the ground against Utah came on 18 carries, as he finished with the second-most rushing yards in the game's history behind only James' 219 in 2011.
