CANONSBURG, PA. — Incoming University of Colorado freshman Hailey Schalk won the AJGA Junior at Southpointe Presented by Dick's Sporting Goods on Thursday.

The Erie, Colo., native recorded a 222 (70-75-77) during the three-day tournament, finishing 6-over at the 5,669-yard, par-72 Southpointe Golf Club.

"This was a nice way for Hailey to end her junior career with a win at the national level," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said.  "Now she moves on to the college level and we are excited to have her join us at CU!"

Schalk took the lead after the first day, finishing 2-under (70) for a two-stroke lead. She carded two bogeys and made seven pars on the front nine, but on the back nine, Schalk sank three birdies and made one eagle. She also had one bogey and made four pars.

The second day saw her finish at 3-over, but she maintained her lead over the field by four strokes. During the round, she recorded two birdies but also had three bogeys and one double-bogey on the par-5 No. 8.

Her final round was a little tougher as she shot 5-over, but she hung on to the lead, defeating the runner-ups, Tiffany Cao (74-78-71--223) and Elina Sinz (74-75-74—223), by one stroke. Schalk carded two birdies, three bogeys and made four pars in the front nine and added four bogeys and made five additional pars on the back nine to finish the event.

CU senior Kirsty Hodgkins finished up play at the U.S. Amateur on Thursday as well, falling to Alyaa Abdulghany, 4 & 2. The two started off square for the first four holes before Abdulghany went 1 up on No. 5. The score would stay at 1 up for the next three holes before Abdulghany would win her second hole on No. 9. She took a 3 up advantage on No. 11. The two would play the next four holes even, but Abdulghany would win No. 16 to finish the match 4 & 2.

"This was a disappointing match for Kirsty," Kelly said. "Alyaa is a tough competitor from USC and from the scoring, it looked like Kirsty just couldn't get on a roll with birdies. We are very proud of Kirsty and happy she had the opportunity to compete in the US Amateur.

"This high-level competitive experience for each player should help them be prepared for the college season that this fall will hopefully bring, but we are still waiting on a decision with what will happen with our sport," Kelly said.
