Charmin Smith Named West Region Director on the WBCA Board of Directors

Aug 12, 2020

ATLANTA – The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Board of Directors has a new NCAA Division I West Region Director as head coach Charmin Smith was recently appointed in July.

Heading into her second season at the helm, Smith will serve for the next three academic years. Appointed by majority vote of the board of directors, she succeeds Gonzaga head coach Lisa Fortier who completed her second term of service and could not seek re-election. The Division I West Region is composed of schools in the Big Sky, Big West, Mountain West, Pac-12, West Coast and Western Athletic Conferences.

Among her duties are to attend and actively participate in meetings of the WBCA Board of Directors, adhere to and uphold WBCA bylaws, guidelines, policies and procedures, attend the WBCA Convention, and execute assigned duties associated with the event. Furthermore, she will appear on behalf of the association to individuals, the public and other organizations, assume a leadership role, and inform the president and executive director of the concerns of her constituent group.

Already making an impact in her role, Smith has joined the WBCA's newly-formed Social Justice Task Force (SJTF) as the co-chair. The group recommended that the association support the West Coast Conference's "Russell Rule."  The rule requires each WCC institution to include a member of a traditionally underrepresented community in the pool of final candidates for every athletic director, senior administrator, head coach and full-time assistant coaching position in its athletics department. The WBCA announced today that it has joined the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Committee on Racial Reconciliation in support of the initiative. Click here for the full release.

On the whole, The WBCA Board of Directors develops policies, procedures and regulations for the operation of the association. It also monitors the organization's financial health, programs and overall performance, and ensures the association has the resources necessary to meet the needs of its membership.

Smith spent two years (2017-2019) serving on the board as the Assistant Coach Director, joining when she was the Associate Head Coach at Cal. She is one of 22 members on the board of directors and is one of four regional directors.
