SAN FRANCISCO - A new episode of “Pac-12 Playlist,” featuring Super Bowl Champion Merton Hanks who is joining the Conference of Champions as the Pac-12 Senior Associate Commissioner for Football Operations, airs today at 10 a.m. PT / 11 a.m. MT on Pac-12 Network and on the Pac-12 Now app.

Today, Hanks joins hosts Ashley Adamson and Yogi Roth to talk about his excitement on joining the Conference and what he plans to bring to the role.

“The number one job, I believe, for any football operations executive, regardless of what conference you’re at, we want to provide equity, we want to provide a best-in-class experience for our student-athletes, we want to show that we’re being innovative in how we go about protecting our student-athletes,” says Hanks. “I think the charge, certainly from Commissioner Scott and certainly the football ADs… made it very plain to me that it is vitally important that our Pac-12 athletes understand that they are the absolute creme de la creme, we are going to treat them as such, we’re going to treat them certainly as ambassadors for life of the Pac-12. How do you do that? You make sure they have a best-in-class experience. You make sure the officiating is top shelf. You make sure that the same game that’s being played in Los Angeles is being played in Oregon. You make sure that every operational piece is as consistent as possible. We look forward to implementing that.”

“You make sure, from an officiating standpoint, that you see your community. We want to make sure we’re the most diverse officiating group amongst certainly the Power 5 for sure. These are things that can be done, these are things that quite frankly we will strive to do. We want to make sure that we are the preeminent conference when it comes to making our athletes feel that they’ve had an exemplary experience at the collegiate level.”

The three-time All-Pro honoree joins the Pac-12 after serving as the Senior Associate Commissioner at Conference USA, and the Vice President of Football Operations & Compliance at the National Football League. Hanks played nine seasons in the NFL, in which he was named to the Pro Bowl four times and won Super Bowl XXIX with the San Francisco 49ers.

Hanks’ full interview will also be available on today’s episode of the Pac-12 Perspective podcast, available now wherever fans get their podcasts.
