Position Breakdown: Outside Hitters

Sep 2, 2020

Depth.

That's what comes to mind when thinking about the current outside hitter position at Utah.

Led by AVCA First Team All-American Dani Drews, the team will have plenty of options on the outside when it returns to the court. Sophomore Zoe Weatherington is coming off a freshman season that saw her named to the Pac-12 All-Freshmen Team, and the Utes also had Madelyn Robinson transfer in from BYU.

In Drews first year as a full-time starter her sophomore year, she stepped up leading Utah in kills and being named an AVCA Second Team All-American. To back that up during her junior year, she was even better. Drews finished second in the country with 643 kills and became the second player in program history to be named an AVCA First Team All-American.

Weatherington will look to build off of a freshman season where she took over a starting role and never looked back. She finished with 298 kills on the season and had a stretch of seven straight matches in Pac-12 play with double-figure kills. Weatherington was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshmen Team.

Robinson totaled 417 kills, 197 digs and 82 blocks in her first two season's playing with the Cougars.

In addition to these three, Megan Yett and Leah Schmidt will have a chance to make their claim on the court as well. Yett played primarily in the back row her sophomore season. Schmidt saw action in 10 matches her freshman season.

Utah has one incoming freshman at outside hitter named Abby Karich. She's coming to Salt Lake City from Surfside, California.

Historically, Utah has had some great outsides and recently, they've had some of the best in the country Adora Anae and Drews becoming the first players in program history to be named First Team All-Americans.

Anae set the program record with 1,920 career kills after having at least 500 in three straight seasons. She was the fifth player in program history to have 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. Her senior season, she helped lead the Utes to their third Sweet 16 in program history.

Overall, the Utes have had six outside hitters that have been All-Americans.
