Utes in the NFL: Week 2 Review, Week 3 Preview

Sep 22, 2020

SALT LAKE CITY – It was a defensive highlight show in the second week of the NFL regular season for Utah as former standouts in the secondary put together impressive performances for their respective teams.

In his debut as a Pro Ute, Julian Blackmon was outstanding for the Indianapolis Colts as they took down the Minnesota Vikings, 28-11. The Layton, Utah, native finished the game with two tackles and two passes defended, including a key pass breakup that he tipped into his teammate's hands for an interception in the third quarter.

Jaylon Johnson had another strong game as the Chicago Bears edged the New York Giants 17-13 on Sunday, finishing the game with four tackles and two passes defended that included a two-yard stop on the goal line. He has five passes defended through two games, the second most by a rookie defender in their first two games since the league started tracking the stat in 1999.

Marcus Williams was business as usual for the New Orleans Saints, leading the team in tackles with nine. His nine stops is the second-highest tackle total of his professional career after notching 10 against Minnesota in the playoffs last year.

On offense in week two, there were also three former Utes that started for their respective teams, including two for the Denver Broncos. Both Garett Bolles and Tim Patrick started for the Broncos against Pittsburgh while Sam Tevi started at left tackle for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Bolles and Tevi are mainstays on their respective offensive lines as Bolles started in his 50th game with Denver. Tevi has seen action in 46 career games for the Chargers, starting in 32.
