Utes in the NFL: Week 3 Review, Week 4 Preview

Sep 29, 2020

SALT LAKE CITY – The first three weeks of the NFL regular season are in the books as several former Utes have been integral in leading their teams to victory and to the top of their respective divisions.

Zack Moss and the Buffalo Bills are sitting in first place of the AFC East with a 3-0 record while Cody Barton and the Seattle Seahawks are leading NFC West with an undefeated record. In his first year in the NFL, Jaylon Johnson has also been key to the Chicago Bears' success as they are currently tied for the lead in the NFC North with Green Bay, both sitting at 3-0.

In week three, Utah's pros saw several firsts, including Eric Rowe notching his first start of the season at safety. Julian Blackmon also earned his first career start as a pro on Sunday for the Indianapolis Colts, getting the starting nod at free safety just a week after he shined in his debut.

On offense, former Ute Tim Patrick had a standout game for the Denver Broncos, scoring his first touchdown of the season and his second career receiving touchdown in the NFL against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His scoring drive started out with a key 27-yard reception on a third-and-20 for a first down, scoring five plays later on a seven-yard pass for a touchdown with 19 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Heading into week four of the regular season, once again several Utes will meet on the competition field. For three seasons, Utah fans were familiar with seeing Johnson and Blackmon in the Utah secondary as mainstays for the program, but on Sunday, Oct. 4, the duo will face off as Indianapolis travels to Chicago.

The Utes also had multiple players find their way off practice squads and onto active rosters with both Jared Norris and Nate Orchard being promoted to Washington's active roster and rookie Javelin Guidry being named to the New York Jets active squad.
