SALT LAKE CITY – It was an emotional week five in the NFL for a certain former Utah football family member as Alex Smith made his return to football, playing for the first time since a gruesome leg injury almost ended his career.
Smith came in during the second quarter for injured Washington quarterback Kyle Allen, stepping foot on the competition field for the first time in almost two years. Smith, the No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick in 2005 from Utah, has had 17 surgeries over the last two seasons after a severe compound fracture caused a bacterial infection that would cause him to fight for his life.
Smith finished the game going 9-of-17 passing with zero interceptions and 37 yards.
What. A. Moment.
Perseverance, grit, mental toughness. Alex Smith has it all. Congratulations, QB! #ProUtes https://t.co/TV2eb2G4Ry

Former Ute Cody Barton started at linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks for the second time this season, recording a career-high and team-high tying 14 tackles. Barton was a force for the Seahawks against Minnesota on Sunday, but unfortunately Seattle couldn't come away with the win.

Staying on defense, the Utes had a pair of former standouts earn their first starts of the season with Kylie Fitts earning the starting nod at linebacker for Arizona and Brian Allen starting for the San Francisco 49ers. Both former Utes had three tackles each in their respective games with Allen making his first NFL appearance of the season after being activated from the practice squad.
