"We're thankful for the approval from public health authorities to compete in an official capacity against Stanford today," said Cal head coach David Durden. "Our program has diligently followed the COVID-19 protocols that have been put in place, and we recognize the fragile nature of what it takes to compete in any sport during these challenging times."
The Bears posted 17 total NCAA qualifying times throughout the meet, including a pair of A-cuts by Trenton Julian in the 200-yard butterfly (1:39.93) and Reece Whitley in the 200 breaststroke (1:48.53). Whitley's time was a lifetime-best and school record.
"It was great to have the opportunity to race against someone other than ourselves for the first time since the Pac-12 Championships last March," Durden added. "Our guys did a great job of sticking with the process through the day, knowing where to be, working through their race process and taking care of themselves post-race."
Other standout performances by the Bears included a sub-19-second performance by Ryan Hoffer in the 50 freestyle (18.97), Zach Yeadon's 4:14.90 in the 500 free, Destin Lasco's 45.21 in the 100 backstroke, Sean Grieshop's 3:42.69 in the 400 individual medley and a pair of quality B-cuts in the 200 back by Daniel Carr (1:40.28) and Bryce Mefford (1:40.45).
