Nagle Adds Highly-Ranked Swiss Player
Oregon head coach Courtney Nagle announced the addition of Sophie Luescher, one of the top junior players out of Switzerland Thursday. Luescher is currently in the top 150 of the ITF World Junior Rankings at no. 130 and reached as high as 114th in the world earlier this year. She is the third player in the top 200 of the ITF junior rankings that Nagle has signed in the last two years.
"We are excited to welcome Sophie to the Oregon family," said Nagle. "She is a great fit for our program and her work ethic and eagerness to improve is inspiring. She is going to make an immediate impact on our program and we can't wait to have her in Eugene."
Luescher has excelled on the international stage, taking home six ITF titles throughout her junior career. She won two ITF singles events in Cairo and Oberentfelden in 2019, winning in straight sets in all but one of those matches in both victories. Also an accomplished doubles player, Luescher has won four times in ITF U18 events, with three wins coming in 2018 and one in 2019.
"Sophie's professionalism and passion for tennis has been clear from the beginning," said assistant coach Elizabeth Lumpkin Robinson. "We know she will impact the future of our program as a tennis player and leader. We are excited to welcome Sophie to the Duck family."
Luescher is a two-time Swiss junior champion, winning the U18 title in 2019 after taking home the U16 championship two years before that. She also won her country's junior doubles title at both U14 and U16 and was the U18 vice champion in 2019. Additionally, she has qualified for the European Youth Olympic Festival and holds a National Swiss Olympic Talent Card.
