Pre-Christmas Schedule Unveiled for Men's Basketball

Nov 23, 2020

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's basketball team will open the 2020-21 season on Thursday, Dec. 3, against Washington as part of the inaugural 20-game league schedule in the Pac-12.
The Runnin' Utes will not be playing New Orleans as reported after consulting with the team medical staff. The decision to not play was made to keep the health and safety of the student-athletes, coaches and support staff at the forefront for both teams.
The pre-Christmas schedule features four non-conference games, three of which are at home, as well as two conference games as part of the inaugural 20-game league slate. Exact dates, tip times and network selections have yet to be finalized for the remainder of the Pac-12 schedule post-Christmas.
The Dec. 3 opener against conference foe Washington will be the first time the Utes have started a season against a league opponent since 1925-26 when Utah hosted BYU in an all Rocky Mountain Conference schedule. The last time Utah opened a season against the Huskies came during the 1952-53 campaign when it played Washington back-to-back days on the road, both going in favor of the home team.
UW was picked to finish just behind the Utes in the preseason media poll at No. 9, and trailed Utah by 46 points. Seniors Nahziah Carter and Quade Green are the two returning players that averaged in double-digits last season checking in at 12.2 points per game and 11.6 points per game, respectively. Washington finished last in the Pac-12 a year ago, posting an overall record of 15-7 and 5-13 in league play.
The following week, Utah will play a pair of games starting with Idaho State on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 4 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks. Tuesday's contest will be the fourth game of the year for the Bengals and fourth-straight on the road to start the year. Utah owns the head-to-head series against ISU 26-4 with a perfect 18-0 record at home. Two have faced off against one another four times during the Krystkowiak Era, all in favor of the Utes.
Four days later, Utah faces in-state rival BYU on Saturday, Dec. 12, for the 261st meeting between the Utes and Cougars down in Provo. Utah won last year's meeting with an exhilarating overtime victory, 102-95, inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Cougars were picked to finish second in the West Coast Conference preseason poll. Tip time is currently TBD but fans can catch the game on
Utah will then have a quick turnaround and play another in-state opponent in Utah Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 15, for a 5 p.m. tip-off. This will serve as just the second meeting between the two programs with the Utes taking the first meeting in SLC 87-80 back in 2016.
The Runnin' Utes remain home as they welcome in Idaho for a Dec. 18 contest inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center. This will serve as the 16th meeting between the Utes and Vandals and first since 2009 when Idaho sneaked out with a rare victory in Salt Lake City, 97-94.
Utah will look to pick up its first road win in conference play since Feb. 23, 2019, at Washington State when it travels to Tempe for a Tuesday, Dec. 22, game at Arizona State on the Pac-12 Network to wrap up the pre-Christmas schedule.
