Gabriela Ruffels Ties For 13th At U.S. Open
A day after rain postponed the final round of the 2020 U.S. Women's Open, USC senior All-American Gabriela Ruffels fired a 1-under 70 to tie for 13th on a brisk Monday (Dec. 14) at Champions G.C. in Houston, locking in her second LPGA major top 15 finish this year.
Ruffels joined senior teammates Amelia Garvey and Allisen Corpuz in the Open this week but was the only one of the trio to make cut, parlaying it into weekend action as she did this summer when tying for 15th at the Ana Inspiration.
Four other Trojan pros also played this week, but none finished as high as Ruffels' 5-over 289 (71-72-76-70), her tie for 13th the best USC result at the U.S. Open since Nicole Castrale tied for ninth in 2012 and the best Trojan amateur result since Jennifer Song also tied for 13th in 2009.
Ruffels' 5-over was also tied for the second-best amateur performance this week.
Garvey, in her U.S. Open debut, missed the cut by one stroke Friday, finishing at 4-over 146 (70-76) through 36 holes. Corpuz, in her third U.S. Open, posted a 12-over 154 (78-76).
Sophia Popov, the 2020 British Women's Open champion, led USC's quartet of pros in the field, tying for 40th at 9-over 293, marking the ninth time she's made the cut in all nine LPGA starts this year.
Lizette Salas tied for 46th and Song tied for 54th. Annie Park did not make the cut.
