Dec 15, 2020

BOULDER- Women's basketball's Jaylyn Sherrod and football's Brenden Rice are the CU Athletes of the Week, presented by Arrow.

In a close, 85-84 loss to Denver, Sherrod shined when she scored a career-high 24 points on 6-of-12 shooting. She added three assists and six steals in the effort. The sophomore guard also went to the free throw line 12 times where she knocked down nine.

Sherrod is now tied for seventh in the country in total steals with 19 and is averaging 3.16 a game which leads the Pac-12.

On her menacing performance defensively she said, "Defense really sets the tone offensively when you can score easy points in transition and when you can get the flow of the game going the way that we want to play." She added, "We want to play in transition, and it sets another option for us and allows us to play free and open. It allows us to do what we want offensively and defensively."

Rice made history on Folsom field when he scored twice, once on offense and once on special teams in a loss to Utah on Saturday. Late in the second quarter, Rice took a punt 81-yards to the house to put the Buffs up 14-7.

In less than two minutes of game time later, Rice opened the second half with a 61-yard catch for a score.

He is the first Buff to score a touchdown in the same game by reception and return since Walter Stanley did it in 1981 against Texas Tech. The return is also the 12th longest in school history and the first for the Buffs since Laviska Shenault Jr. scooped up a fumble that he returned for a score.
