Bears Selected Eighth In Preseason WCGA Poll
BOWLING GREEN, OHIO – The Cal women's gymnastics program was selected eighth in the in preseason Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) poll as announced on Thursday morning. The Bears accumulated 919 points and were picked eighth, tied with Denver.
The No. 8 ranking is tied for the best preseason ranking in program history. The Bears were also picked eighth in 2019. This is the fourth time in the last five seasons that Cal was voted into the preseason top 10, with the Bears entering 2020 ranked ninth and 2017 as the No. 10 team in the preseason poll.
California returns an exciting group of student-athletes for the 2021 season as they feature the past two Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in Milan Clausi (2019) and Nevaeh DeSouza (2020). Additionally, 2020 All-Americans Kyana George (All-Around) and Maya Bordas (All-Around, Uneven Bars) return in 2021. In 2020, Cal had a school-record eight All-Pac-12 honors from five different gymnasts, all of whom will return for the 2021 season.
The Bears return all but one member of last year's team that finished the season ranked ninth in the country. Cal has added six freshmen to the team this year including three-time JO USA National Team Members Andi Li and three-time USA National Team member Gabby Perea.
Florida was tabbed as the No. 1 team in the country with 1,167 points and 16 of the 33 first-place votes. Oklahoma also received 16 first-place votes, but finished with 1,152 points and a preseason No. 2 ranking. LSU, Utah, Michigan, Alabama, UCLA, Denver and Georgia round out the top 10 of the WCGA preseason poll.
