Guvenc Excels at Turkish Short Course National Championships

Dec 23, 2020

ISTANBUL, Turkey – UCLA swimming and diving commit Gizem Guvenc was a standout at the Turkish Short Course National Championships over the weekend, picking up a number of individual and relay event wins while helping set a new Turkish National Record in the 4X50m freestyle relay.

Competing for Fenerbahçe, Guvenc recorded an individual win in the 200m freestyle (1:56.89) and was runner-up in the 100m freestyle (54.87). The win extended what's been a historic run of success for her in the 200m free - Guvenc was the first Turkish woman ever to break the 2-minute barrier in that event, and is currently the national record-holder at 1:55.91.

She had arguably even more success in the relay portion of the meet, helping Fenerbahçe to wins in the 4X50m free relay, 4X100m free relay, and 4X100m medley relay, as well as a second-place result in the 4X200m free relay.

Most notable among those relay finishes were the 4X50m free and 4X100m free.

In the 4X50m, she completed her portion of the race in 25.34 as Fenerbahçe posted a 1:40.00 to set a new Turkish national record.

Then she recorded a 53.80 split in the 4X100m free, fastest on the relay squad and a new personal best.

Guvenc is scheduled to enroll at UCLA in fall 2021.
