Macario Gets the Call
CHICAGO – Three months after participating in her first senior training camp with the United States Women's National Team's (USWNT), Stanford senior Catarina Macario has been called up to participate with the reigning world champions at the next training camp in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 9-22. The camp will conclude with a pair of matches against Colombia on Jan. 18 (4 p.m. PT on FS1) and Jan. 22 (4 p.m. PT on ESPN2).
Macario is one of three active collegiate players on the current USWNT roster. She is joined by six Cardinal alumnae: Jane Campbell, Alana Cook, Tierna Davidson, Kelley O'Hara, Sophia Smith and Andi Sullivan.
The seven former or current players are the most from a single university in the USWNT camp.
Hailing from San Diego, but born in Brazil, Macario led the NCAA in goals (32), assists (23) and points (87) in her MAC Hermann Award-winning 2019 season. All three totals set single-season program records en route to Stanford's third national title. Macario is a two-time MAC Herman Award winner and three-time ESPNW Player of the Year.
Macario has previously camped with the junior team as well as playing with the U-23 team in domestic competition.
O'Hara's 131 career appearances with the USWNT are the fourth-most on the roster, while Davidson and Sullivan have been capped 26 and 16 times, respectively. Campbell has made three caps, while Cook has been capped once. Smith, the top pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft by Portland Thorns FC made her first career appearance with the senior national team in a friendly against the Netherlands on Nov. 27 last year.
Stanford enters 2020 as the defending national champion after setting a program record with 102 goals in 2019. The Cardinal have won three of the last nine national championships and an unprecedented five-consecutive outright Pac-12 titles.
