UCLA (10-9, 2-3 in 2020) was voted third in the preseason tally of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) men's volleyball coaches released on Friday. BYU (17-1, 6-0) was picked for the top spot in the league with Pepperdine (8-6, 3-2) securing second place.
Highlighting the list of returning players for the Bruins for 2021 are all-league honorees Cole Ketrzynski and Austin Matautia. Ketrzynski posted a season-best 17 kills in matches a year ago against Princeton (a), Ohio State, Long Beach State (a) and Concordia (a). He had nine double-digit kill matches in all and was selected to the MPSF second team and the MPSF All-Freshman teams last season. Ketrzynski ranked eighth in the MPSF in kills/set (3.0), 10th in points/set (3.3) and 15th in the league in hitting percentage (.296). Matuatia was an honorable mention all-league pick after being a starter in all 19 matches in 2020. He ranked fourth in the MPSF in aces/set (0.41) and hit over .300 in seven matches.
An 18-match MPSF regular season men's volleyball schedule is in the works and will be announced soon.
