Softball America Top 25 D1 Freshmen

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona softball's freshman class was ranked as the nation's top recruiting class when it was announced in the fall of 2019. Now, two premiere members of that recruiting class have received more national recognition.

True freshmen Carlie Scupin and Sophia Carroll have been named among Softball America's 2021 Top 25 College Freshmen, the publication announced this week. Scupin was ranked No. 8 while Carroll checks in at No. 25. Arizona is one of five schools with multiple selections on the list.

The list includes both true freshmen as well as freshmen from last season that retained their year of eligibility when the 2020 season was canceled. Among true freshmen, Scupin ranks third while Carroll ranks 15th.

Scupin, a first baseman from Tucson, was the 2019 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year. She was ranked as the No. 21 recruit in the country by FloSoftball.

Carroll, a shortstop from Phoenix, was the No. 12 recruit nationally according to Extra Inning Softball.

The two highlight Arizona's impressive group of newcomers, which joins an experienced core of returners, including seven Super Seniors. Five of Arizona's seven seniors -- Jessie Harper (#3), Dejah Mulipola (#11), Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza (#13), Reyna Carranco (#73) and Mariah Lopez (#76) -- were named Top 100 players by Softball America earlier this spring.

Arizona is in its second week of spring practice. No schedule has been released by the Pac-12, but the NCAA season is scheduled to begin the second weekend in February. Follow Arizona on Twitter @ArizonaSoftball and check ArizonaWildcats.com for the most up-to-date information on the 2021 schedule.
