Fish Commits To Huskies For 2021-22

Jan 14, 2021

SEATTLE – A local standout returning close to home becomes the seventh member of UW Track & Field's recruiting class for 2021-22, as Rosalie Fish this week signed her Letter of Intent with the Huskies. A Native American member of the Cowlitz Tribe, Fish comes from the Muckleshoot Reservation near Auburn, Wash. and is currently completing her Associate's degree at Iowa Central Community College.

Fish was the first member from her tribe to sign a National Letter of Intent for college athletics when she committed to Iowa Central CC. She attended the Muckleshoot Tribal High School where she won numerous Washington state titles at the 1B level including sweeping the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m as a senior in 2019. She ran a mile PR of 5:02.51 at the Brooks PR Invite in 2019.

At Iowa Central CC, Fish helped the Tritons win the National Junior College cross country title as a freshman in 2019, and take second at the National Half Marathon Championships in 2020 with a fifth-place finish.

Fish has made activism a crucial part of her athletics career, bringing awareness to the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women. Her efforts have been featured in The Seattle Times, via a TedTalk, as well as a recent interview on Dyestat.com.

"I committed to transfer to the University of Washington because of the impressive running program, high-quality education opportunities, visible Indigenous presence, and my supportive phone calls with Coach Maurica Powell," said Fish. "It is an honor to be able to represent my home state at the NCAA DI level, especially because Washington state has 29 federally recognized tribes. I want to demonstrate to other Native youth and athletes that our dreams are within reach."
