Utah Men's Tennis Sweeps Grand Canyon In Season Opener

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's tennis team cruised past Grand Canyon in the season opener on Sunday, sweeping the Lopes 7-0 at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes did not drop a set in the dominant victory. 

Utah kicked off the 2021 season with doubles action where all three Ute pairs went on to win. Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin Busleiman teamed up in the top spot and downed Lang/Novak of GCU in a tight-match, 7-5. Francisco Bastias and Randy Cory got the win at the No. 2 position over Cvitanovic/Grant 6-3, while Slava Shainyan and Mathias Gavelin made it three-for-three on wins at the No. 3 spot. The Ute duo downed Boris-Moller/Van Zeggelaar 6-2. 

Shainyan competed on court one for singles where he downed GCU's Lang 6-2, 7-6. It was all Capalbo on court two as the freshman rolled against his opponent Cvitanovic with scores of 6-1, 6-1. Right behind was his doubles partner Busleiman on court three, who won his match 6-2, 6-4. 

On the back half of the lineup, Bastias earned his first Ute singles victory over GCU's Grant by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Gavelin battled Boris-Moller on court four, but came away with 6-4, 6-4 set wins for the victory. Rounding out the Utes, freshman Bruno Krenn also got his first career victory, downing Van Zeggelaar 6-2, 7-6.

Utah men's tennis will hit the road for three matches next weekend. Utah will play Wichita State, UT Arlington and SMU in Dallas.
