Wildcats Hold Edge After First Day of Copper Cup
MARICOPA, Ariz. – A back-and-forth day in the scorecards of the Copper Cup tilted to the Wildcats' favor at the conclusion of the first day of the Arizona Men's Golf season-opening event. Arizona used the last three holes of singles action to take a 4-3-1 advantage over the Sun Devils going into the second and final day of the match play tournament.
Arizona picked up its four points thanks to the head-to-head wins on Sunday by senior Briggs Duce, sophomores Chase Sienkiewicz and Chaz Aurilia, and freshman Sam Sommerhauser. Senior Brad Reeves tied his opponent, ASU All-American Chun An Yu who ranks among the nation's top amateur golfers.
Sienkiewicz's strong play came on the course's par-4 holes, which he lead all players in scoring on at 4-under par. The trio of Reeves, Aurilia and Sommerhauser all made eagles in the first day's action.
The day's action began with four-ball action as the Wildcats and Sun Devils split the four doubles action as the duos of Reeves and Laskin and Duce and Banke won the two points for Arizona. Duce and Banke claimed their four-ball point with five holes remaining.
The two programs will complete the inaugural Copper Cup on Monday at AK-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
