ASU Meet Notes

TEMPE, Ariz. – Fresh off of a big win in the home opener last weekend, the 2021 Pac-12 slate begins this Saturday for Sun Devil Gymnastics with a trip to Los Angeles to compete against the preseason No. 7 UCLA Bruins.

Sun Devil Outlook
No. 15 Arizona State (1-1)

  • Over the weekend, the Gym Devils earned a close, comeback win over No. 10 BYU with a team score of 196.275. Freshman Sarah Clark clinched the win in the anchor spot on floor with her 9.800.
  • Sophomore Hannah Scharf had the best meet of her career, earning career highs in the all-around (39.500), on beam (9.925) and on floor (9.900). She won all three of those titles as well.
  • Sarah Clark was naemd the Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Week after competing in three events last week: bars (9.750), beam (9.900) and floor (9.800). Her score on beam was the highest mark on that event by a freshman since 2008. She showed her nerves of steel, putting up that score after her teammate fell just before her turn in the lineup. She proved her mental strength again on floor, going in the anchor spot and clinching the win in a close meet.
  • Bars has been the most consistent event so far for the Gym Devils. They have surpassed 49.000 in both meets, their best being a 49.175 which they earned at Oklahoma.
  • The Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll was released and the Sun Devils were picked to finish sixth. Last season, they finished in fourth place after the regular season. Utah was picked to finish on top.

Opponent Outlook
No. 7 UCLA (0-0)

  • This is the first meet of the season for the Bruins, who were ranked No. 7 in the WCGA Preseason Poll.
  • Last season, UCLA finished No. 3 in the nation after the shortened season. They were also ranked first on floor and second on bars.
  • The Bruins lost five All-Americans who were consistent competitors in their lineup, including national champion Kyla Ross. However, they return All-Americans Nia Dennis, Norah Flatley and Margzetta Frazier.
