Already starting their season with a 7-0 sweep against GCU this past Monday, the Sun Devils are eager to return to the courts. Freshmen Marianna Argyrokastriti and Giulia Morlet alongside transfer Domenika Turkovic proved they deserved to wear the pitchfork after defeating each of their opponents in straight sets.
ASU starts the weekend against Baylor. The Lady Bears opened the season with three-consecutive 7-0 victories, topping Prairie View A&M back-to-back before blanking Rice, all of the wins coming at home in Waco, Texas. Baylor went 10-2 in the shortened 2020 season and returns top threats Kris Sorokolet, Angelina Shakhraichuk, and Paula Baranano. All three earned atleast 14 singles wins last year.
Texas started the season 2-0 with a back-to-back 7-0 sweeps over North Texas and SMU. During the 2020 season the Longhorns secured an overall record of 11-3. Senior Anna Turati concluded the 2020 season at No. 4 in the final Oracle ITA national singles rankings and returned for her second senior season at No. 5 in the Oracle/ITA preseason rankings. Texas was also predicted to win the Big 12 Conference title.
Iowa hasn't opened its season yet but went 6-6 in the shortened 2020 season and will make their fourth appearance at the ITA Kickoff. The Hawkeyes will return 8 players, including fifth year senior Elise Van Heuvelen who was named the ITA central region senior of the year and earned Big Ten first team honors for the fourth-straight. Iowa also welcomes three new freshman in Gina Kondos, Alexa Noel and Vipasha Mehra. Noel is ranked No. 97 in singles and No. 7 among the top-10 newcomers in the ITA.
