BERKELEY, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (0-1, 0-1 MPSF) fell to No. 5 California (1-0, 1-0 MPSF), 17-16, in the first game of the day in overtime on Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

In the first game of the season against the Golden Bears, Bruin sophomore Tommy Gruwell led all scorers with a game- and career-high five goals.

The Bruins held a two-goal lead four times during the game (at 4-2 in the first, 11-9 in the third, and at 12-10 and 13-11 in the fourth) but couldn't maintain the lead down stretch as Cal would score three goals in the final 1:32 of the fourth quarter to take a 14-13 lead. Junior Jake Cavano was credited with his only goal of the game with one second remaining in regulation that sent the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, Gruwell would give the Bruins their last lead of the game at 15-14 with a power play goal at the 1:47 mark of the first overtime period. Nikolaos Papanikolaou tied the game at 15-15 with 1:16 remaining in the first OT with a power play goal. Cal would regain the lead at 16-15 on a penalty shot, converted by Miles O'Brien-Schridde at the 2:26 mark of the second overtime period. The Golden Bears extended their lead to 17-15 when Warren Loth scored the eventual game-winning goal with 1:48 remaining. The Bruins were forced to get creative and pulled goalkeeper Bernardo Maurizi to provide a 7-on-6 advantage. UCLA worked it to perfection as Gruwell netted his fifth score of the game to trim the lead to 17-16 with 0:45 to go. After a defensive stop by UCLA, the Bruins got the ball back with one more shot to tie the game, but the ensuing shot hit the head of a Cal defender and the game clock expired.

Maurizi finished with 10 saves in goal for the Bruins while Adrian Weinberg recorded 13 for Cal.
