No. 18 Men's Tennis Beats Cal, 4-0, in Opener

Jan 23, 2021
Sam Feit earned his first dual-match win as a Bruin Saturday.

LOS ANGELES – In a match delayed four-and-a-half hours due to rain, the No. 18 UCLA men's tennis team defeated California, 4-0, in its dual-match opener at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.

The initial match of ITA Kickoff Weekend action at the USC Regional began with singles play. Doubles play was not needed. Keegan Smith registered the clinching win, following fellow victorious Bruins Roscoe Bellamy, Mathew Tsolakyan and Sam Feit.

Saturday's second Kickoff Weekend match between UNLV and top-ranked USC was rained out. The teams will instead meet Sunday at 11 a.m., PT. UCLA will play the winner of that contest Monday, not before 1 p.m., for a trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Urbana, Ill.

The Bruins set the tone early, racing out to multiple commanding leads. No lead was bigger than that of Roscoe Bellamy, who surrendered just one first-set game across his match against No. 97 Philip Hjorth on Court 4 to give UCLA a 1-0 lead.

Next off the courts was Tsolakyan, who continued his hot streak started during the shortened 2019-20 season. He bested Jacob Brumm on Court 5, 6-2, 6-3, to run his personal winning streak to eight matches.

Making his dual-match debut as a Bruin, No. 109 Feit put UCLA one win away from victory. The graduate transfer from Gonzaga edged Ben Draper in the first set on Court 3 before rolling to a 6-4, 6-2 decision.

Finally, in a top-50 showdown on the top court, No. 10 Smith was able to prevent No. 42 Yuta Kikuchi from forcing a third set, securing a 6-3, 6-4 win before the next storm hit.
