Utah Tennis Defeats UT Arlington 6-1

Dallas – The Utes concluded the second of three road matches with a win against UT Arlington on Saturday afternoon, downing the Mavericks with a 6-1 victory at the SMU Tennis Complex.

The Utah men's tennis squad took the doubles point quickly, with the first win coming from Mathias Gavelin and Slava Shainyan on court three after the Mavericks did not fill the lineup. Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin Busleiman dominated their match and defeated UTA's Sau and Akiyoshi 6-1 to gain the doubles point. 

After securing the 1-0 lead, the Utes went on to control singles play as well, starting off with another automatic win at the No. 6 position for Utah's Bruno Krenn for a hole in UT Arlington's lineup. The second singles point came from Franciso Bastias after a decisive victory against UTA's Alban, 6-1, 6-0. Franco Capalbo moved to the No. 1 position on Saturday and defeated his opponent, Diaz, by a score of 6-3, 6-3.

At the No. 5 position, Utah's Gavelin downed his opponent, Beamish, coming out 6-3, 6-2 for another Ute win. Geronimo Espin Busleiman also took the upper hand against UTA's Abiyoshi, 6-3, 6-2 on court four to put the Utes at 6-0 in the match.

After a tightly contested match at the No. 2 position, UT Arlington was able to earn their first point when Shainyan took the defeat from UT Arlington's Sau, 2-6, 6-2, 7-10.

The Utes will conclude their three-day road trip with a match against Wichita State on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. MT.
