ITA Kickoff Schedule Shifts

LOS ANGELES — The No. 1 USC men's tennis team whipped up a swift sweep through singles play to notch the Trojans' first win of 2021, beating visiting UNLV 4-0 at Marks Stadium in USC's first match of ITA Kickoff Weekend. Rain had washed out USC's scheduled match with the Rebels yesterday, so the Trojans were eager to get down to business and secure their 13th straight spot in the ITA Kickoff Weekend title match.

Tomorrow (Jan. 25), USC will square off against crosstown rival No. 18 UCLA in the championship match not before 2 p.m. at Marks Stadium. That morning at 10 a.m., California and UNLV will face off in the consolation match. The winner of the USC-UCLA battle will punch a ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships next month, a feat the Trojans are eager to accomplish in order set up defense of their 2020 championship trophy claimed at last year's event.

Due to yesterday's weather interruptions, singles was on tap first for today's match as well. The Trojans jumped out fast and claimed first sets down the line against the Rebels. Hitting the finish line first was Bradley Frye, who tore off a 6-2, 6-0 win over UNLV's Milos Dabic on court four to make it a 1-0 lead. Not long after, #104 Stefan Dostanic stormed past Jordan Sauer with a 6-3, 6-1 decision at the No. 3 spot, and it was 2-0 Trojans.

Playing in his first dual match as a Trojan, freshman Lodewijk Weststrate looked quite at home as he fired off a 6-2, 6-0 win on court six over Clayton Alenik to set his Trojans up for victory. Punching up the clincher for USC was #79 Ryder Jackson on court five, sealing the deal with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anton Ornberg to lodge a 4-0 score on the board and bring action to a close with the USC victory. On courts one and two, #1 Daniel Cukierman and #19 Riley Smith were in good position, but their matches were suspended with Jackson's decider.
