BERKELEY, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (1-2, 1-2 MPSF) rebounded after going winless on day one to upset top-ranked USC (2-1, 2-1 MPSF), 11-8, on Sunday morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

UCLA sophomore Tommy Gruwell led all scorers with four goals.

The Bruins trailed 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, but exploded for five goals in the second period to take an 8-7 lead into the break at the half. Then the Bruins went to work on the other side of the ball, limiting USC to just one goal in the second half.

Senior Nicolas Saveljic, who scored twice in the win, opened the scoring in the third period with the eventual game-winning goal on a penalty shot at the 7:45 mark to push the lead to 9-7. Gruwell added his fourth of the game with 0:50 left in the third quarter to give UCLA a 10-7 edge heading into the fourth.

Both teams picked up only one goal in the final period. After USC's Jacob Mercep closed the gap to 10-8 on a penalty shot with 6:17 to go, Bruin senior Chasen Travisano netted his second of the contest at full strength (4:24) to provide the 11-8 final.

Maurizi finished with a season-high 12 saves in goal for the Bruins while Nic Porter recorded 10 for USC.
