SALT LAKE CITY – After a dominant performance on Friday night, the Utah volleyball team backed that up with another great performance on Sunday, January 24 in the Huntsman Center.
The Utes beat Arizona 3-0 (25-13. 25-13, 25-16) to sweep the weekend and start the season 2-0.
Utah finished the match hitting .368 with only eight errors and held Arizona to just a .106 hitting percentage.
The Utes took control in the first set scoring eight straight points to go up 16-7. They kept the pressure on and closed the set out 25-13. Utah had 15 kills with zero errors hitting .600 in the opening set.
They didn't slow down in the second at one point going on a 9-2 run to go up 15-7. The Utes once again pushed their lead out further closing out the set by the same score in the first set.
With the chance to clinch their second sweep of the weekend, Utah took care of business in the third winning it 25-16 to move to 2-0 on the season.
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres spread the offense around and finished with 28 assists. Emily Smith also got some action at setter and had three assists.
Dani Drews led the team with 13 kills hitting .321. On the weekend, she had 28 kills hitting .317. Madelyn Robinson had nine kills hitting .533 and with 2.0 blocks. Kenzie Koerber had five kills and 10 digs.
Kennedi Evans led the team with 4.0 blocks. Allie Olsen got her first career kill in the match.
After opening the season at home, Utah will now be on the road these next couple of weeks. First road trip will be to Berkeley, California to take on the Cal Bears on Friday, January 29 and Sunday, January 31.
