Men's Golf Leads Southwestern Invitational After Round One Monday

Led by a pair of sophomores who had their freshman season cut short last spring, the Sun Devil men's golf team has the lead after an opening round 4-over 292 in the Southwestern Invitational held at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.
Sophomores David Puig (2-under 70) and Ryggs Johnston (71) are both in the top five as Puig is one of three tied at the top of the leaderboard on a day where only 11 players shot par in the 66-man field. Puig was at 5-under but bogeyed holes 16 and 18.
Senior Chun An Yu birdied two of his final four holes to finish at 1-over 73.
The 12 teams will play 18 holes Tuesday and Wednesday with Golf Channel providing live coverage from 2:30-5:30 MT.
THE COURSE
The Lakes & Oaks courses plays at par 72 with yardage at 6,992.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
This is the 42nd edition of the Southwestern Invitational. The tournament began in 1978 at North Ranch Country Club with USC as the host. C.W. Johnson served as tournament director for more than 25 years. North Ranch also hosted the 1988 NCAA Championships. The Southwestern Invitational has also been known as the Southwestern Intercollegiate, the USC Collegiate Invitational, the North Ranch Intercollegiate or the Cleveland Golf Classic over the years. Pepperdine and USC co-hosted the event in 2013 and 2014, and the Waves then took over sole hosting duties beginning in 2016.

SUN DEVIL TITLES
ASU has competed in the tournament 27 seasons and has won eight titles. It won the 1980, 1983, 1986, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2001 championships.
