Cougs Improve Their Score by 26 Strokes in Round Two of the Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Washington State men's golf team has a 26-stroke improvement in the second round of the Arizona Intercollegiate, as the Cougars shot 286 (+2) at the Sewailo Golf Club on Tuesday, Jan. 27. WSU goes into tomorrow's final round tied with Washington for 13th overall in the 17-team field.

The second-day improvement was evident across the team's scorecard, as each WSU golfer improved their tournament score by five-strokes-or-better during the second round of the Arizona Intercollegiate. Fifth-year senior Nicklaus Chiam and graduate transfer Eric Hagen had the biggest improvement on the day, as each golfer improved their score by eight-strokes on Tuesday.

Chiam shot 3-under par (68) during his second go-around at the Sewalio Golf Club. The fifth-year senior carded four birdies on the day, while he shot an even-par on 13 holes. Chiam's 68 (-3) was tied for the fifth-best score in the second round, as he finished the day tied for 13th overall on the player leaderboard.

Hagen collected a team-high five birdies on Tuesday to help him post a second-round score of 72 (+1). The graduate transfer enters the final day of the Arizona Intercollegiate in a tie for 57th.

Junior Max Sekulic shot one-under par on three holes in the second round, while sophomore Pono Yanagi carded two birdies. Freshman Nate Plaster had the best hole of the day for WSU, as he carded an eagle on the eighth hole.

Host Arizona enters the tournament's final day leading the 17-team field. The Wildcats go into the third round with a team score of 559 (-9), holding 10-stroke lead over second-place Wake Forest. Arizona's Brad Reeves holds a two-stroke lead over teammate Trevor Werbylo atop the player leader board at 137 (-5).
