2020-21 Schedule | Watch List

LOS ANGELES – The United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club released the watch list for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy and three USC players were named to the list.

Tara McKeown, Penelope Hocking and Savannah DeMelo all were recognized as possible candidates for college soccer's top award going into the 2020-21 season. USC is one of five schools with three players named to the 54 player list and one of just two Pac-12 programs (along with Stanford) to have a trio recognized.

McKeown was a semifinalist for the award last year after earning consensus First-Team All-American and Pac-12 Forward of the Year recognition thanks to her breakout junior season. The Trojan striker scored 15 goals and notched eight assists in leading USC to an appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The watch list honor comes just two weeks after McKeown was selected eighth overall by the Washington Spirit in the 2021 NWSL Draft. McKeown is eligible to play this season and has the option to sign with the Spirit in the future.

Hocking formed the other half of a prolific scoring duo with McKeown last season, posting the sixth most goals in the nation with 18. Hocking was named to the All-Pac-12 and All-Pacific Region first teams after putting up 43 total points (18 goals, 7 assists), the second most ever in a season by a Trojan. The junior forward is the first USC player ever to score at least 10 goals in her first two collegiate seasons and is already fourth on the Trojans' career scoring list.

For DeMelo, it is her third straight year being named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list, but this year comes on the heels of the USC midfielder missing the 2019 season with an Achilles injury. DeMelo was stellar in her first two collegiate seasons (2017 and 2018) though, racking up All-American and All-Pac-12 recognition each campaign. As a freshman, she scored four goals and notched five assists on her way to All-Pac-12 first team and Freshman All-American honors. As a sophomore, DeMelo upped her game, posting nine goals and 10 assists on her way to All-American third team and All-Pac-12 first team. With two years of eligibility remaining, the Trojans' #10 is tied for 10th on USC's career assists list.

The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year's award was pushed back to accommodate the seasons affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Winners will be announced May 27 at the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Press Conference and Banquet taking place at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo. The Trojans have had a semifinalist for the award three of the last four seasons, with McKeown last year, Ally Prisock being named a semifinalist in 2018 and Morgan Andrews being named a finalist in 2016.

USC will open the 2020-21 season next week when they take on Pepperdine at home on Feb. 4.
