Golf Adds Davis Johnson To 2021-22 Roster
SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah Men's Golf head coach Garrett Clegg announced the addition of Davis Johnson to the 2021-22 squad, bringing in another top talent from the state of Arizona.
"We thought we would be done with the 2021 class with Joseph and Zack, so we feel fortunate to be able to add Davis to the group," Clegg said. "He had a fantastic summer in Arizona and has burst onto the scene."
Johnson comes to the Utes from Scottsdale, Ariz. where he was a standout for the Scottsdale Prep Spartans, along with having a successful amateur career during his time in high school. He currently ranks in the top-100 in the 2021 recruiting class by Junior Golf Scoreboard.
He earned team MVP his freshman and sophomore seasons, finishing sixth at the state tournament as a freshman and second as a sophomore. He was also the Spartan Player of the Month in May of his freshman year.
"I wanted to go to Utah because I think it is a great place to grow as a person and as a player, which will allow me to succeed at the next level," Johnson said. "Coach Clegg is also a really great guy, and has coached and seen a lot of good players grow."
On the amateur circuit, he finished the 2020 season with eight top-10 finishes, including tying for fourth at the Thunderbird Junior Classic. He also tied for sixth at the Thunderbird Invitational as part of the Ping Jr. series and made it to the Round of 32 at the Arizona Amateur.
In 2019, he placed in the top-10 at four tournaments with his highest finish coming at the Prescott City Junior Championship.
"We had originally wanted to bring in three players for this class, but with COVID and recruiting restrictions it took us a little extra time identifying that third player," Clegg said. "We feel like Davis will add a lot to our program. He is a skilled player whose game has drastically improved over the past year and a half. I am close friends with his swing coach, Richard Lee, and that helped us to identify Davis and get him to Utah."
Davis will join Zack Neff out of Salt Lake City, Utah (Olympus HS) and fellow Scottsdale native Joseph Lloyd (Pinnacle HS) as Utah's newcomers in 2021-22.
