Top-Ranked USC Men's Tennis Sweeps LMU 7-0
LOS ANGELES — The No. 1 USC men's tennis team outlasted the weather and got business taken care of again at Marks Stadium in drumming up a 7-0 sweep of visiting Loyola Marymount. In a match delayed a couple hours by rain, USC pulled out tight wins in doubles for the opening point. The Trojans stayed the course in singles and grabbed wins down the line, with Riley Smith securing the clincher from court two to help get USC to 3-0 on the year with the team's win.
Today's win also marked USC head coach Brett Masi's 199th career victory, setting up the Trojans' leader for a benchmark 200th career win as a head coach, which may well come when USC returns to action next week.
Doubles matches stayed on serve until USC's #50 Mor Bulis and Stefan Dostanic were able to break the cycle and. Snag a 6-4 win on court two. Soon after, USC's top guns #1 Daniel Cukierman and Riley Smith also broke through late and secured the doubles point for the Trojans with their 7-5 decision on court one. That suspended a tight match on court three where Sean Holt and Colter Smith were teamed up in doubles for the first time as Trojans.
USC captured the first sets on five courts in singles, with #1 Daniel Cukierman hitting the finish line first with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over LMU's Diego Nava at the top slot. Freshman Lodewijk Weststrate drummed up the next win, delivering a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court four over Emin Torlic to put USC in position for a clincher. On court two, #19 Riley Smith took the reins and hauled in the fourth point for the Trojans, topping Daniel Moreno 6-4, 6-4.
The match would play on, and Jake Sands snapped up a win on court five to drum up a 5-0 lead for USC on his 6-3, 6-3 win over Austin Di Giulio. Moments later, redshirt freshman Colter Smith notched his first dual-match singles win as a Trojan on a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-1) comeback over Ethan Prost. That put the final action going on court three, where #104 Stefan Dostanic dug back in and wrapped things on a winning note with his 7-5, 6-4 decision over John Bryan Otico.
The Trojans have a doubleheader on tap at Marks Stadium next week. On Friday (Feb. 5), USC will take on Saint Mary's at 10 a.m. and then square off against Boise State at 2 p.m.
