Jan 30, 2021

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State Tennis swept all six singles matches in straight sets en route to a 7-0 victory over Montana Saturday morning at the Simmelink Tennis Courts. Later in the afternoon, the Cougars defeated Eastern Washington, 5-2, for their second victory of the day.

With the wins, the Cougars improve to 2-2 on the season, while both Montana and Eastern Washington fall to 0-2.

Cougar senior Melisa Ates highlighted the day as she posted a pair of singles victories, including the match-clincher against EWU, to push her career singles win total to 91, sixth all-time at WSU. Next on the list for Ates is Ksenia Googe with 92.

The Cougars were strong in doubles play in both matches, surrendering just 12 total games in six matches. The No. 2 duo of Ates and Yang Lee won 6-0 and 6-1, respectively, while the No. 1 pair of Michaela Bayerlova and Hikaru Sato won by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

In singles play, sophomore Pang Jittakoat joined Ates winning both matches, having little trouble in either as she surrendered a total of five games. Bayerlova, who entered the weekend ranked No. 55 nationally, had a straight-set win over Montana at No. 1 and did not play singles against Eastern.

Eastern captured impressive wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as Scout Mathews defeated Sato, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, and Jennifer Kida defeated Fifa Kumhom 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Lee closed out the day, winning a tiebreaker for the third set in a 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Yasmin Mansouri.
