Utah Tennis Wins Pair of Matches Against Idaho State

SALT LAKE CITY –  The Utes take down Idaho State 5-2 twice on double-match day. The pair of victories marked the first two of seven home matches for Utah after their Dallas road trip. 

Utah 5, Idaho State 2
The Utes kicked off the first of two matches Saturday morning at the Eccles Tennis Center. Utah's Chris Heck and Mathias Gavelin fell behind early and dropped the doubles match 6-2 on court three. Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Busleiman evened the doubles score after winning 6-4 on court one, but Idaho State was able to pull out the 7-6 (3) win against Francisco Bastias and Slava Shainyan on the second court to take the doubles point.
 
The Utes got it going early in singles play as five of the six courts won the first sets. Bastias pulled in the first Ute singles win at the No. 3 position, making quick work over Idaho State's Castillo-Lopez 6-2, 6-1. Shainyan bounced back with a 6-4, 6-2 win at court two over Petrovic for another Ute point to put the score at 2-1. Busleiman downed Rendek immediately after at the No. 4 spot with scores of 6-2, 6-3.
 
Clinching the win was Gavelin on court six after winning 6-4, 6-1 over Steinhauser. Capalbo battled it out at the top spot for Utah where he pulled out the victory in three sets, winning the tiebreak 10-4 for the victory. Idaho State picked up its sole singles win on court five with a win by Fujita to end the match at 5-2 in favor of the Utes.
 
 
Utah 5, Idaho State 2
In their second match of the day, the Utes dropped the doubles point to ISU after a close fight. Utah's Shainyan and Gavelin won their match 6-3 on the second court, however, on the first court Capalbo and Busleiman were edged 7-5. With the doubles point to be decided in the third court, Bastias and Luis Flores put up a fight, but ultimately fell to Idaho 7-6 (7-2).
 
Singles play looked more promising for the Utes, who had four of six courts leading the first set. Capalbo gave the Utes their first point when he defeated Idaho State's Petrovic at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-1. The second point came on the third court, where Busleiman also downed his opponent 6-3, 6-3. On the fourth court, Bastias fell to Fujita 6-0, 6-3, placing Utah and Idaho State at a two-point tie. Shainyan secured the Utes' third point after a tough fight against Idaho State's Trhac at the No. 1 position, downing the opponent 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
 
On the fifth and sixth courts, the matches were close and lively as the match came to an end. Gavelin awarded the Utes their fourth point on court five as Idaho's Rendek fell 6-3, 7-5, while Utah's final point came when Bruno Krenn took the victory against his opponent after three tough sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
