Huskies Earn Another Sweep Of Vandals

Jan 31, 2021

SEATTLE – Washington women's tennis backed up its season-opening sweep of Idaho with another 7-0 victory on Sunday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Today the Dawgs dropped just one set, and in the middle of the lineup, Sarah-Maude Fortin and Zoey Weil combined to lose just one game between them.

Washington (2-0) got three freshmen acclimated to the college game this weekend with their first two matches, while returners Weil and Sedona Gallagher both played higher up in the singles lineup than prior seasons.

Fortin, one of the three freshmen, won the first set of her first match yesterday by a 6-3 count. She then won the second set, 6-1, and today she won 6-0, 6-0 against Idaho's Maggie Chen.

The Montreal native talked about fighting through some initial nerves this weekend. "It was really, really exciting," Fortin said. "Finally we got to compete. We haven't really competed in eleven months. Of course there were some nerves, but today I think I managed my nerves much better than yesterday. Getting my body moving, my legs, staying loose and trusting my shots and going for it."

The Huskies opened with the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Vanessa Wong and Sedona Gallagher went from 6-4 winners yesterday to a 6-0 count today to lead the way.

Weil was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 4 singles over Katherine Jhang to finish even before Fortin's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3. Wong had the clinching fourth point with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot over Melissa Huchet.

Freshmen Yolanda Lin and Tara Chilton finished within seconds of each other and had matching scores, both winning 6-3, 6-2 at the five and six positions. That left Gallagher, who dropped a close first set but came back to win the second set and take the super-tiebreak against Laura Spataro, 4-6, 6-2, (10-3) to complete the 7-0 Husky win.

Washington will now have another two-match series with the same opponent, but with a week in-between meetings, as Seattle U. comes over to the Nordstrom Tennis Center this Thursday, Feb. 4, then again on Feb. 11.
