No. 8 BRUINS HIT THE ROAD  — UCLA (1-0), ranked No. 8 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, takes to the road for a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) matches at top-ranked BYU (0-0) --- Feb. 4 and Feb. 6.

Last season, UCLA dropped a straight-set decision at BYU (29-31,12-25, 23-25) in the lone meeting of the 2020 campaign. The Bruins were outhit .256 to .373 by the Cougars and had 18 service errors on the night. Cole Ketrzynski topped the Bruin attack with 11 kills for his fifth-straight double-digit kill performance at the time. UCLA managed just one service ace for the match, a 2020 season-low total. The Blue and Gold will be looking for their first win at BYU since the 2009 season. The Bruins dropped five-setters in 2019, 2017 and 2013 after winning 3-1 in March of 2009.
The Bruins will return home to host USC on Feb. 13. All of this season's home matches are scheduled to be played in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. No fans will be present for the 2021 UCLA home matches.
The Bruins return 17 players from the 2020 edition of UCLA men's volleyball, including 14 who saw match action last season ... Returning starters include --- outside hitter Austin Matautia, opposite Cole Ketrzynski, outside hitter Alex Knight, liberos Cole Pender / Cole Power. Among the non-returners are 2020 starters at setter, Mads Kyed Jensen, and middle blockers Matt Younggren and Daenan Gyimah. Returning setter Sam Kobrine started the last five matches of 2020. Newcomers include S/Opposite Miles Partain (Palisades HS) along with outside hitters Ethan Champlin (Classical Academy HS) and Grant Sloane (Northwood HS). 

LAST MEETING --  Last season, UCLA lost its only 2020 match against BYU, 0-3 (29-31,12-25, 23-25), in Provo.Cole Ketrzynski led the Bruin attack with 11 kills. UCLA was out-aced by the Cougars 1-4 and outblocked 7.0-9.0. BYU hit .373 for the match to .256 for UCLA.

NOTES -- Sam Kobrine and Cole Pender began the week leading the NCAA in set assists/set (13.3) and digs per set (3.7), respectively ... Pender was named Off the Block's National Libero of the Week after his 11-dig effort vs. GCU ... Cole Ketrzynski who paced UCLA with 13 kills against GCU in the 2021 opener, registered 17 kills in last season's win at Concordia which were the most by a Bruin true freshman since Micah Ma'a put down 18 balls against Hawai'i in Feb. 2016) ... Sam Kobrine totaled 25 kills, 25 digs and 7 blocks over the last 5 matches of 2020, all starting assignments ... Austin Matautia, who hit .462 with 8 kills against GCU, had at least two aces in nine matches last season ... Middle blocker Daniel Matheney, who put down a career-best 10 spikes versus GCU in the opener while hitting .500, recorded 15 kills and 8 blocks in the last 3 matches of 2020 ... The Bruins were picked to finish third in MPSF coaches poll --- 1-BYU; 2-Pepperdine; 3-UCLA; 4-GCU; 5-Concordia, Irvine; 6-Stanford; 7-USC.

 AT HOME -- UCLA won its season-opener in straight sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) last week in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom over No. 10 Grand Canyon ... UCLA has won its last 8 matches played in Pauley since dropping a Jan. 2019 decision to Long Beach State ... Over the past five-plus seasons, UCLA is 41-5 in matches played in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom (2016: 10-1--lost to UCI, 2017: 8-1--CSUN, 2018: 13-2--Long Beach 2xs, 2019: 7-1--Long Beach; 2020: 2-0; 2021: 1-0) ... The last team not named Long Beach State to defeat UCLA, in Pauley, was CSUN in February of 2017 (note: the Bruins did lose three home matches in the Wooden Center after the 2017 CSUN loss). The Bruins are slated to be at home for seven of their first 11 matches in 2021.

ON THE ROAD -- UCLA was 6-6 on the road last season, with a 1-0 mark in neutral site contests. 

NCAA STATS -- UCLA enters the week leading the nation in kills/set 15.67, hitting % at .341 and set assists/set 15.33.
