Beavers Fall to No. 11 Washington in Three

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon State volleyball team fell in three sets to 11th-ranked Washington on Saturday afternoon in the Alaska Airlines Arena.
 
After winning set one 25-18, the Huskies narrowly topped OSU 27-25 in the second set before going on to take the match in set three, 25-17.
 
Senior Maddie Goings ended an opening 5-0 run by the Huskies. The teams went on to split the next nine points, alternating rallies, as the Beavers remained within striking distance of Washington at 9-6. After UW took a five point lead, OSU took three of the next four points to cut the deficit to three, 12-9.
 
Washington went on to jump out to a 24-12 lead following an 8-1 run. The Beavers fought off seven Husky set points with a 6-0 run before Washington eventually went on to claim the 24-18 win.
 
Oregon State took an early 6-4 lead in set two, but Washington came back with a 4-0 run to claim an 8-6 lead. The teams traded points back-and-forth as the Huskies held off OSU, holding an 11-10 advantage. A 5-1 Oregon State run that included kills from four different Beavers, put them back out in front at 16-15.
 
The Huskies regained the lead after a 4-0 run, but freshman Kateryna Tkachenko sparked a 3-0 run with a kill and an ace. Freshman Mychael Vernon capped off the run with a kill, putting Oregon State back out in front by one. OSU was forced to call a timeout after back-to-back points by Washington, giving them a 22-21 lead.
 
Vernon tied the game at 23-23 to force Washington to call a timeout, but the Beavers ended up falling 27-25.
 
The teams split the first 16 points of set three before the Huskies went on a 4-0 run, jumping out to a 12-8 lead and causing OSU to call a timeout. After Washington took an 18-10 lead, the Beavers went on a 4-1 run behind two Goings kills and a Tkachenko kill to draw within five of Washington.
 
The Huskies went on to win the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.

  • Freshman Mychael Vernon registered a team-leading 12 kills.
  • Freshman Izzi Szulczewski posted a team-best 31 assists.
  • Freshman Ellie Turner recorded a team-high 12 digs.
  • Oregon State finished with 39 digs compared to Washington's 30.

Next Up: Oregon State hosts Arizona State for a back-to-back series of games on Feb. 11 and Feb. 12. The first game will begin at 12 pm (PT), while the second will start at 11 am.
