Caleb Rickard Notched A Mark Of 14.350 On Vault On Saturday

Army Feb. 6 Scoresheet

BERKELEY – With multiple veterans competing in five of six events and a true freshman holding his own in the all-around, The No. 8 California men's gymnastics team defeated No. 12 Army, 380.600-371.550, Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.

The Golden Bears improved to 8-0 all-time against Army.

Noah Newfeld competed in the all-around for the first time in his career, notching a score of 77.500. Newfeld improved his season bests in three of the five events he competed in last week's season opener. He also posted a 13.400 in his first career vault routine.

"I'm so happy for Noah," head coach JT Okada said. "He's put in the work, and showing that he's a great competitor and has the energy to do all six events, which is tough to do. I won't have him do all-around every meet, but I wanted to see what the potential for all-around was today, and he showed that he can not only handle it but do it well."

Similar to last week, Cal's top event was vault with a team score of 68.500, an improvement from the 68.350 from last week. Caleb Rickard tied his career high on vault for the second straight week with a score of 14.350. Freshman Jelani Sweet notched a vault score of 13.300, up from his 12.950 last week.

"I'm happy for him [Caleb] because he's another guy who puts in the work, shouldering five events himself," Okada said. "Doing five of six events are big burdens, so I'm really happy when they have one stand out event and other solid scores."

Just like Rickard, Yu-Chen Lee competed in five of six events. He secured a career best on horizontal bar (12.750) and a season high of 13.250 on parallel bars.

"He really pushes himself in training, but sometimes when you push yourself in training that hard, the recovering just isn't there," Okada said about Lee. "He put together five events today, and he's also somebody who could be in an all-around spot for us."

The Bears return to action Saturday, Feb. 13, squaring off against Stanford at 4 p.m. PT from Golden Bear Rec. Due to currently local health guidelines, fans will not be allowed to attend the meet in person. The virtual meet will be live streamed here
