Soccer Hosts NMSU in Sunday Matinee
TEMPE, AZ -- After kicking off the 2020-21 season with a 3-1 win on Thursday, the Arizona State soccer team closes out the weekend against New Mexico State University at Sun Devil Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. MST.
The Sun Devils and Aggies met only once in a 2015 neutral site battle that saw ASU come away with the 5-0 shutout win. The Sun Devils are hot off a win against UTEP that included stellar performances fit for a stadium. Familiar faces: Nicole Douglas, Olive Jones, Eva van Deursen, and Lieske Carleer continued to do what they do best while the squad's newcomers brought the extra kick. The team combined for 19 shots through 90 minutes, turning up the heat in the second half with 13. ASU's defense showed out as the backfield stifled UTEP to only three shots.
Sun Devil Rewind
Junior forward Nicole Douglas tallied two goals in Thursday's win against UTEP. Douglas is now tied for ninth in all-time career goals in program history with 20. Junior midfielder Olivia Nguyen netted the game-winning goal for the maroon and gold.
On Thursday night, sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Green made her collegiate debut playing all 90 minutes for the Sun Devils to earn her first career win. Sophomore Kiki Stewart and freshman Lucy Johnson also made their collegiate debut.
Oh, the Aggies
The Aggies ended last season with an overall record of 4-12-2 and 3-5-2 in conference play. This season, they played an exhibition game in El Paso against UTEP, winning 3-1 to start 2021 with a 1-0 record.
The Aggies look to freshman midfielder Loma McNeese to produce offensively as she already put up one goal in her collegiate debut against UTEP. Last season's scorers came from junior forward Corey Kizer who led the team in goals last season with five and senior Shea O'Connor forward who finished second in goals with four.
