Almost Game Week: Get to Know the Freshmen

It's nearly game week for the Utes! The season begins Thursday, Feb. 11 with a single game at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix before the team treks across the Valley of the Sun for five games in Arizona State University's Kajikawa Classic.

Utah fields a veteran team, returning every pitcher who logged an inning and seven of the eight position starters from the 2020 squad that went 14-4. Two-time all-region selection Alyssa Barrera returns in center field, coming back for a "super senior" season after the NCAA froze all student-athletes' eligibility because of the pandemic-shortened season.

While those key upperclassmen form the bulk of the starting lineup, the 2021 Utes are bolstered in their depth by a deep and stellar class of eight freshman who look to contribute in their first year of collegiate softball. Each freshman was recently introduced in a social media campaign.
